Executive Vice President, Global Head of Research and Development
John Reed oversees Sanofi’s discovery and development of therapeutics, focusing efforts on medicines that have the potential to transform the practice of medicine and improve the lives of people with serious diseases. Under John’s leadership, the R&D organization has built a robust pipeline by sharpening Sanofi’s research focus, employing cutting-edge therapeutic platforms, simplifying processes and creating a culture that responds to the urgent needs of patients.
Previously Global Head of Roche Pharmaceutical Research & Early Development, John has had a distinguished career as a biomedical research leader across non-profit, academia and industry. Prior to Roche, John was CEO of a large, independent, non-profit biomedical research institute. John’s laboratory produced over 900 publications and was among the world’s most cited for scientific impact. He began his career as a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania, and has since served on multiple editorial boards of research journals, was scientific founder or co-founder of four biotechnology companies, and served on the Board of Directors for five public companies. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the recipient of numerous honors and awards.
John holds a BA in chemistry from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville and an MD and PhD (Immunology) from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He trained in Molecular Biology at the Wistar Institute and in Clinical Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the Hospital of the U. of Penn, where he co-directed the hospital’s molecular diagnostics laboratory.
John is an exercise enthusiast who competes in triathlons and has completed several Ironman events.
