Sanofi will join hundreds of organizations around the world on February 28 to recognize International Rare Disease Day. Sanofi has been a proud supporter of Rare Disease Day since it was established by the European Organization of Rare Disorders (EURORDIS) in 2008.
Rare Disease Day is an opportunity to shed light on the impact that rare diseases have on patients and their families. Given their rarity, these conditions are often difficult to diagnose and treat, and patients can endure a long journey involving many specialty doctors, tests, and misdiagnoses. They can go years or even decades without a correct diagnosis, all the while suffering physically from complications of their disease and psychologically from not knowing what their condition is.
Pledge4Rare is Sanofi’s global initiative aimed at bringing together the rare disease community to raise awareness of the more than 7,000 different rare diseases collectively affecting more than 350 million people around the world. The campaign encourages people to pledge to run or walk a kilometer (or mile) or more during the month of February in support of the rare disease community, and to share photos and videos on social media using the hashtag #Pledge4Rare.
“Beyond the physical act of running or walking with Pledge4Rare we are demonstrating that we stand together with all those impacted by rare diseases,” said Sebastien Martel, Sanofi Genzyme’s Global Head of Rare Diseases. “No matter where you are in the world, you can show your support and raise awareness. Together we have the opportunity to make a difference.”
There is no cost to participate in the Pledge4Rare and if we reach our target distance of 7,000 miles, Sanofi will make a donation to a leading rare disease patient advocacy organization.
